I am mostly an enameller, which is the last thing I expected to be!
I love working with colour and also the different textures that can be created with enamel; from glassy, glossy surfaces that are smooth to the touch to grainy, weathered, crusts. I use a printing method on copper to make graphic, pop style images but it can also yield freer, abstract results. I may sometimes scratch lines and patterns into the powder before firing or draw on top of the fired image with graphite pencil. The finished images are then set into silver as jewellery pieces or left as tiles. They are flat, decorative pieces, but they are also highly tactile and the fingertips will constantly be drawn to them during wear.
I also use a plique-a-jour technique that creates a ‘stained glass’ effect. I like the way light travels through it and throws coloured rays onto the body, sometimes mixing colours as it goes.
I like the element of chance and spontaneity that comes from working with enamel.
In other work I use various mixed media as these bring their own colours and textures to the work. I’m interested in bold images, symbolism and 'meaning'.
