Despite
working in one of the oldest and most traditional of materials, my work
is very much about the here and now. The inspiration for my work often
comes from events and incidents that are going on, and changing around
me, events followed by a nation daily in the papers. It is this Õthrow-away
aspect of the news, which most interests me. My pieces could be called
'fad' artefacts, reflecting the same throw-away nature; objects likely
to be found in the doorway of a 'Mister Pound' . Through remaking these
objects in clay, I am changing their emphasis with the change in material;
light plastic objects are made heavy, solid and more imposing. The kitsch
is taken out of context in these pieces, and used as a vehicle for far
more sinister objectives. The pieces are subverted through their decoration
to pose far more serious questions; a cutesy, happy childhood world, hit
with a dash of realism. Working with multiples allows the freedom to manipulate
my ideas, to make each individual piece unique but create a 'group' piece
that expresses a whole theme, not just part of a theme, as only a single
piece may have been capable of suggesting.
